While not a direct injury from combat, Cumming was in a combat area and is classified as injured during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Cumming had part of his skull removed in order to relieve the swelling, which was replaced with a piece of acrylic that will eventually fuse to the bone of his skull. Staples can be seen where the surgery took place. Soldiers injured during Operation Iraqi Freedom are cared for at the National Naval Medical Center.

After mining operations are complete, the company landscapes the land to prevent acid mine drainage and plants it with ap proximately 19 different species in an attempt to reintroduce the prarie to an area that had been heavily mined. According to the NGS book entitled A Heartla nd of a Continent, Wyomings Black Thunder Operation, the largest coal mine in the U.S ., annually strips 30 million tons of raw energy from an immense bed near Wrigh t. Low price and low sulfur content help make this bonanza competitive with eas tern mines. This coal deposit was formed 300 million years ago during the Paleozoic, when t his area was a swamp.
